Largo do Carmo

Largo do Carmo in Lisbon holds several remarkable historical and architectural curiosities.
Site of the Carnation Revolution: The Carmo Barracks served as Marcello Caetano’s refuge and the setting for the surrender to the MFA on April 25, 1974.
Home of Fernando Pessoa: The poet rented a room at number 18, where he lived between 1908 and 1912.

Monument to the Discoveries

The Monument to the Discoveries in Belém (Lisbon) stands 56 meters tall and was built in the shape of a caravel pointing toward the Tagus River.
The first version was created in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, constructed using ephemeral materials such as wood, iron, and plaster. The definitive version, in concrete and Leiria rose stone, was inaugurated in 1960.

São Carlos National Theatre

Following the tragic earthquake of 1755, the Ópera do Tejo was completely destroyed just months after opening. Lisbon went nearly 40 years without a major opera house. When a group of entrepreneurs and aristocrats decided to fund the São Carlos, the theater was built with remarkable speed for the time: construction took only six months, spanning from March to September 1793.
