The CCB was not created solely to serve as a performance venue. Construction began in 1989 with a highly urgent objective: to host the first Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 1992. To ensure the building was ready in time to welcome European leaders, work proceeded at a frantic pace—24 hours a day in shifts—and was completed in just about three years.
Construction began in 1501 by order of King Manuel I and was funded by profits from the spice trade (such as pepper and cloves) from India. The monument was designated a World Heritage Site in 1983 and remains one of the most visited places in the country.
The church houses the tombs of the navigator Vasco da Gama and the poet Luís de Camões, and also contains the tomb of the writer Fernando Pessoa in the cloister.
It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Only at the Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém (which has produced them since 1837) is the authentic *pastel* made using the secret recipe—distinct from the traditional *pastel de nata*.
The Hieronymite monks living in the monastery created the famous *Pastéis de Belém* recipe to make use of the egg yolks left over from starching their habits.
The Monument to the Discoveries in Belém (Lisbon) stands 56 meters tall and was built in the shape of a caravel pointing toward the Tagus River.
The first version was created in 1940 for the Portuguese World Exhibition, constructed using ephemeral materials such as wood, iron, and plaster. The definitive version, in concrete and Leiria rose stone, was inaugurated in 1960.
